Step by step

  1. Make it safe. Call 911 if anyone is hurt or in danger. Shut off water or power if it’s safe to do so.
  2. Prevent more damage. Your policy expects you to take reasonable steps, like covering a broken window or moving things away from water. Keep receipts for anything you buy.
  3. Document it. Take photos and video before anything is cleaned up or thrown out. For a vehicle accident, get the other driver’s name, licence, plate and insurance details.
  4. Report it to your insurer. Call their 24-hour claims line. The number is on your declarations page and on your auto pink slip.
  5. Let Steve know. He can help you understand what’s covered, deal with the adjuster, and keep things moving.

Common questions

Should I call my insurer or my broker first?

If it’s urgent (water pouring in, a fire, a serious accident), call your insurance company’s 24-hour claims line first. The number is on your policy documents and on your auto pink slip. Then let Steve know, so he can help you through the rest of the claim.

Where do I find my insurer’s claims number?

It’s on your policy declarations page and, for auto claims, on your pink liability slip. If you can’t find it, call or email Steve and he’ll get it for you.

Will making a claim raise my premium?

It can, depending on the type of claim and the insurer. That’s a fair question to ask before you report a small loss. Steve can talk it through with you, but don’t delay reporting anything serious or anything involving another person or vehicle.
